Balaton

The lake Balaton is the largest (600 km2) and warmest (25-28 centigrade) fresh-water lake in Central Europe, and it is considered to be one of the most popular and well-known holiday resort in Europe. The extended surface and the shallow water enables the whole amount of water to warm up, and arises little surface waves. This waves stimulate the blood-circulation. In addition, the light-radiation reflected on the water-surface enhances the effect of the sun-radiation.
Taking a dip in the lake Balaton or the thermal and medicinal bath nearby enables the human organism to regenerate. The surrounding, diversified scenery with its volcanic hills and valleys is not only an ideal place for excursion, but also provides excellent soil for wine yards, and orchards.
If you like rambling, you may enjoy the rare sight of different routes, fauna and flora around the lake Balaton. The Balaton-Upland National Park, and the Zoo also offer an enjoyable outdoor programme. If your favourite sport is cycling, then taking a tour on a cycle-path around the lake Balaton, is a “must”! You can try out every kind of sport, let it be traditional, such us water-cycling, rowing, water-skiing, sailing, boat-trip, beach-ball, tennis, riding. If you feel like doing or something more exciting, then bobs and go-carts are also available at the beaches. What’s more, you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the lake Balaton from a glider. Art lovers can visit several medieval and baroque churches in the neighbouring villages and towns.
Various programmes are organised for every age-group. The organ concerts at the Tihany abbey, and other concerts, performances, lectures, exhibitions in the Valley of Arts attract many visitors. The Balaton wine festival takes place every August, and during this popular event everyone can taste the local winemaker’s fruity wines, while enjoying the exciting programmes. But if you long for stillness, silence and romantic evening atmosphere, then you both can admire the sight of the “golden bridge”, or the “silver bridge” during clear nights!
